Rhinoceros hornbill birds of paradise12/15/2023 The Rainforest Discovery Centre is near Sepilok's Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre, at Arboretum Road near the Forestry Department building, where the road to the right leads to the RDC (about 700m away). There are all eight species of hornbill found in Sabah. Species include the Bornean bristlehead, kingfisher, hooded and black-and-crimson pitta, scarlet minivet, banded broadbill and Diard's trogon. There is also a canopy walkway and observation tower. After the 40-minute flight from Kota Kinabalu to Lahad Datu, it is a one-and-a-half hour drive.īy Sepilok Forest Reserve, the discovery centre edges a lake and has well-marked trails through lowland rainforest. The resort has packages that include accommodation, guiding and transport. Rhinoceros hornbills can often be spotted close to the Tabin Wildlife Resort, the only accommodation in the reserve. Birdwatchers may see the Bornean bristlehead, Asian paradise-flycatcher, blue-headed and blue-banded pitta, dusky munia, black-throated wren-babbler, Bornean wren-babbler, Bulwer's pheasant, thick-billed, long-billed and grey-breasted spiderhunter, and yellow-rumped and orange-bellied flowerpecker. This means perching birds are easier to see and identification and photography is easier than in primary forest, as the trees are shorter. The biggest reserve in Sabah, Tabin Wildlife Reserve is dominated by secondary rainforest. The lodge is a 40-minute flight to Lahad Datu from Kota Kinabalu, then a two-and-a-half-hour road trip. The Borneo Rainforest Lodge in the Danum Valley Conservation Area is run by the tourism division of the Sabah Foundation. Other often seen or heard species include the buffy fish-owl and brown wood-owl, great argus and crested fireback pheasant, Bornean bristlehead, pitta, and red-naped Diard's trogon. Danum Valley's hornbill species include the bushy-crested and the striking rhinoceros hornbill. There are also trails through the forest and excellent guides, many of which specialise in birding. Protected virgin forest and a highlight for international birders, it has a 170m-long walkway strung 27m above the valley floor - the perfect height for birdwatching in the forest canopy. Two other good places are Sandakan's Rainforest Discovery Centre and Poring Hot Springs in Ranau. On Sabah's east coast, the two prime birdwatching areas are Tabin Wildlife Reserve and the Danum Valley Conservation Area. Just north of the equator, its lowland forest, in particular, is a rich habitat and has the biggest number of bird species on the island of Borneo. The Malaysia State of Sabah is a birder's paradise. That was on Gaya island, a 15-minute boat ride from the Jesselton Wharf in Sabah's capital, Kota Kinabalu. It was sitting on a rope handrail with a piece of fruit in its beak. My first Sabah encounter with a hornbill had been rather different rather more placid.
